Castro's communist Cuba would have had the potential to start a world-wide nuclear war, even if the Soviet Union didn't want it. Also the Soviet Union was building submarines that could launch nuclear weapons against the United States, so the weapons in Cuba would not be as important as before.

∙ 13y agoThe US was worried about missiles in Cuba because of the speed in which they could reach major cities along the east coast. This lack of warning time for US air defense systems would make it easier for a surprise attack. Missiles launched from Russia could be tracked and would take a longer time to reach the US mainland, giving the US time to retaliate.
