In order to give the executive branch what they called energy. One man would be able to make decisions and act on them, and rally public support for them, much more effectively than a committee. If their had been a plural executive they would have had to argue everything out before doing anything and if one or more of them disagreed with the decision they could say so publicly and undermine public support for the policy. In this the founders had the example of the Roman Republic in their minds. Rome had two consuls who exercised power, particularly military command, on alternate days. this sometimes resulted in one set of orders being given one day only to be contradicted the next and then changed back again the third. That makes it hard to get anything done.
Congress does not select the president, the Electoral College actually elects him.

None . In the election of the first presidents there was no electoral votes nor general elections. The men who became president were elected by congress. The founding fathers felt that the voters were not educated enough to be able to select a president.
We elect them to represent our state. The number is based on population. Alaska has 2 and California has the most. The reason we have them is because of the founding fathers. They didn't want Congress nor the people to select the leader.

Yes, in 1778 the only voters were white land owning males over 21 and congress felt that the population of people were not informed enough to vote. Even among the men who were eligible to vote the percentage was small and few people paid attention to political process. They were too busy farming (90% farmed), few were eligible, and to travel anywhere took several days.

They wanted the President to be elected by the people of the United States. In a compromise (Remember, the Constitution is a bundle of compromises), they Founding Fathers decided to have an "Electoral College," a group of common civilians who's sole purpose for being elected is to go and elect the President. Of course, in this day and age, with technology making a popular vote of the President much more practical, many people advocate the abolishment of the Electoral College. They argue that the popular vote should elect the President, rather than the people who elect the President.
The President submits his choice to be a Supreme Court Justice for approval to the Congress. If the Congress does not vote for approval, (and there have been times when they voted against the President's choices), the person does not become a Supreme Court Justice and the President has to select someone else and have that person voted for by the Congress.

There were colleges in the colonies then, which is where a lot of them went. Yale, Harvard, King's College (Columbia) and the College of New Jersey (Princeton), educated a lot. A select few went abroad, but not many.
