George Washington was a very tall imposing figure and survived many dangerous French and Indian and Revolutionary War battles without a single wound, so he had a kind of superhero aura around him. More practically, he did not have any well known political beliefs or any scandals, so he was a fairly benign choice for president.
I dont think he really wanted to become president. If he did want to I think it would be because he wanted to help America. The people picked him because he was a good leader in the army and made many strategic moves that helped win America's independence.
I believe it was because nobody else wanted the job, LOL! No, seriously, Washington was the natural choice. The common man saw Washington as the General who beat the British but his fellow statesman new his real strength. Washington was a man who instilled in others the desire to do more and the ability to manage and hold together something that by all rights should have fallen apart. Washington was a master at bringing together the things required at the crucial hour. He also understood early that the Revolution was not his to win but it was his not to lose. Time would be his greatest ally. He understood the broader implications of a protracted war with Britain. He knew that given time Britain's will to continue the fight would wane and that they would seek terms of peace. Also, Washington did not want the job of President. He accepted it out of a sense of duty to his Country. I think most understood that these were admirable traits and these were things the fledgling Nation could build upon.
He was leading the country to good paths so people thought he would make a good leader and made him their president.
