Due to the rise of Christianity in Rome and the adoption of the beliefs associated with it, Public Fights and Executions were no longer needed or approved of. This made the Colosseum obsolete. In the Middle Ages, like most ancient Roman structures, it was quarried for building materials. All the marble surfaces were stripped. So were the bronze braces which clamped the stones of the outer façade. The arena was converted into a cemetery. The vaults were rented as accommodation or workshops until the 12th century. In the 13th century a local aristocratic family used as a castle.

The actual "Falling-Down" can be attributed to 4 relatively powerful earthquakes: two during the late 5th, one in the 9th and the last in the 14th centuries. In the 1349 earthquake much of most of the southern façade fell because it laid on less stale soil.
