alot of people didnt see any reason to get rid of it.

and also because the slaves didnt know that they were free.

free labor. despite continuing social and moral arguments (see above), the only demonstrable incentive to maintain slavery, for so long, was economic.

at the time, lots of people saw lots of obvious reasons to get rid of it. just as you see them today. sadly, the competing incentive of ENORMOUS capital, proved too strong, for many many many years.

The Civil War probably lasted so long, because the South had a lot more determination and hard-fighting farm boys than the North reckoned on.

attritionit wasa war of attrition, these always ake longer than "go-kill-em-all' wars

After Robert E. Lee captured John Brown, he was asked by President Abraham Lincoln to join the Union and be the commander for war. However, Robert refused the offer, putting Viriginia, his home state in first priority. His decision changed history, for if he had gone with the Union, the war would have been over more sooner. Because he led the Confederate, the Confederate was able to last that long

Several FactorsFirst off, the vast majority of troops in BOTH armies were farm boys. And once they had training and experience, the soldiers of both armies were of about equal ability, though the South had more capable generals of higher rank earlier in the war than the Union--and this is a big reason why the war lasted so long. Another important reason was the sheer size of the South, about 700,000 square miles over a 1,000 mile front. This made a quick Northern victory impossible, despite its advantages in manpower and resources. Also, the rifled musket was the main small arm of the war and it gave much more power to the defender than the attacker, given the tactics used in the war. Since the South fought a mainly defensive war, this made Union offensives slower and more difficult.

From the very beginning of the US Civil War, the Union held important advantages over the South. This was seen in the number of soldiers the North could place on the battle field, it's safe harbors for building warships, its manufacturing superiority, and the fact that when the war began, the South had to create a government. The better question is why did it take the Union four years to end the US Civil War.The South's advantages, such as not needing to overthrow the US government, but cause the North to tire of the war, fighting on its own territory, and being able to field strong armies even after major defeats certainly were Southern advantages. With that said, these advantages paled against the North's ability to continually raise large armies and successfully invade Southern territory.

The US Civil War lasted too long. This was due to an almost total mismanagement of the war by the Union. Political interference along with not calling up another 500,000 troops before the end of 1862 was a glaring error. These troops would have been available as in February of 1864, for example, Lincoln called for 500,000 more troops within 6 weeks.

People saw it as just a way of life, until some people came along and believed slaves shouldn't be treated that way, and slaves fought for freedom.

it was a battle of strangth and power. it lasted as long as it did because the north was abolishing slavery but slavery was a huge part of the souths economy. so they did it for the economy.
