The Panama was chosen to build the canal at because it would of been more money and more time to travel around the South Americas but they built the canal so it would be a shorter travel...

They chose Panama for the building of the canal because of geography. Panama is in the right place and had the right features, Lakes and rivers to fill the locks in the canal with.
