I'm presuming you mean actual families, not parents. Well, sometimes perhaps parts of a family could have an argument with each other, they'll take sides and then they'll all fall out with each other. There could also be a death or a tragedy in the family that draws the family apart and makes it very difficult for them to communicate with one another. There are many reasons as to why this could happen.

If you do mean parents, it could be for similar reasons. If you want more information, I've found a website for you:

If it was your parents who just got divorced, you must be in great pain. Give yourself time to get through it and get counseling if you need it. If it was a couple you know, try to be supportive but if your friend(s) need their distance, back off until they are ready to talk about it. Sometimes just listening to them venting will help, even if you don't agree with everything that's said. They're going through a life-changing experience right now.

People get divorced when they feel that the marriage is so badly damaged and that they are so incompatible with each other that to continue being married would only cause them more pain and discord.

Sometimes one partner is violent and abusive and the other must flee to safety (with the children if any) and use a mediator to obtain the divorce.

Some divorces are emotionally turbulent; some are quiet and businesslike if slightly melancholy; a few are actually parting on friendly terms, but those are admittedly rare.

In many cases, one partner cheated and committed adultery (had sexual relations with another person outside the marriage), sometimes both partners will have had affairs.

Sometimes people get married too quickly without realizing they're not really compatible.

Sometimes one partner finds a dream career far away from where they have their marital home, and the other knows he/she absolutely cannot move.

There are many reasons, but if divorce ever happens to you, here's what to do about the turbulence and emotional trauma it can cause:

People grieve the loss of a relationship in much the way as they mourn the death of a loved one, but there is the added feeling of betrayal and anger and above all, hurt. Let yourself in on your emotions; don't try to deny them. Take some time to heal; even if you were the one who initiated the divorce, you will be in emotional pain for awhile, and if it was your ex-spouse who initiated it, you must feel devastated and even doubt whether you are worthy of being loved. Well, being divorced does NOT mean you are not worthy of being loved, nor does it mean you cannot eventually fall in love again with someone new.

But don't go throwing yourself into a rebound relationship; I know the hard way how disastrous those can turn out to be!

Instead, let yourself mourn. You'll pass through stages of loss, and you'll feel very angry for awhile. Use that anger to energize yourself: follow new interests, explore your community, live your life.

Gradually you will be able to rebuild your life as a single person. If there are children, be sure your visitation or custody rights are being seen to properly.

When you feel that you are strong enough to live a happy life on your own, ironically, is the point at which you are truly free to fall in love again. Good luck.

Financial stress is one major reason - the family doesn't have enough money to cover all the bills they have amassed leading to arguments and fights over money.

Another reason is infidelity, one spouse cheating on the other with a third person.

Also, sometimes couples split because they have grown apart - interests have changed over time and the couple no longer has the common interests they used to.

If your spouse files for a divorce and you refuse to divorce them will a judge grant the divorce anyway?

Yes - if you live within a jurisdiction with "no-fault" divorce laws. Where "at-fault divorce" laws are in effect, a party requesting a divorce must demonstrate that there are grounds for the divorce. If, for example, someone files for divorce on the grounds of adultery in a jurisdiction where "at-fault divorce" is the law, and the other spouse disputes the grounds - i.e. denies adultery took place and refuses to agree to the divorce, a judge may deny the divorce petition. In some jurisdictions men may divorce their wives at-will, but women may not divorce their husbands without their husband's consent.
