The story goes that his wife managing her stockings and garter belt over her expanding belly due to pregnancy was becoming difficult she as many women of the time felt that they could not be seen in public without their hosiery. Ah those were different times.

It was the rise of the miniskirt (literally) in the mid-1960s that made pantyhose a household product. When your skirt was shorter than stockings are long pantyhose were the perfect fit.
Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy donned their miniskirts, demand exploded and women began to change from the traditional stockings, garter belt, girdle combo to pantyhose.
