The World War (it was not called the First World War back then, since nobody knew there would be a second one) began in 1914, and at that time, most women did not even have the right to vote. The society was still very traditional in most countries, and even though a few women were becoming lawyers or doctors or professors, most were not. The assumption was that women belonged at home, caring for their family, while men went out to fight in the nation's wars. On the other hand, there were some women journalists who covered the war, one of whom was Peggy Hull; she covered the war from France in 1917-1918.
