AnswerBuddhists worship in a temple for the same reason Christians worship in a church. Jews in a synagogue or Muslims in a mosque. Buddhist temples also hold statues of the Buddha and of many gods, so that the faithful can pray directly to them.

Many Buddhists, especially in the West, adhere to philosophical Buddhism, for which there is no god. In this case, worship does not really apply.

We buddhists worship the buddas because they give us luck.On Chinese New Year we go to the temple to pray to the buddas and hope they will give us a good year.We see the dragon dance that is deticaded to the dragons that buddas ride on.And the question that said if a budda is a god or not the real answer is yes.The person that wrote no is crazy. If they were not a god why do we buddhists pry to them.

Not all Buddhists go to temples, and when they go somewhere for Buddhist fellowship, worship is not always what they are doing. The Buddha was not a god, and definitely did not want to be worshipped, so the places where Buddhists gather tend to be about three things: learning, meditation, and fellowship.

So to attempt to answer your question as written: If Buddhists go to Buddhist temples it is to be a part of a community that will support their growing understanding of what the Buddha taught, and their daily practice, starting with meditation.

People like to get together in places where they can meet as a group. If the place has been in use for generations or is a memorial to some significant event, so much te better. In the case of Buddhists they get together to contemplate, listen to learned discourse and have a sense of community. To call this worship leads many westerners to draw parallels to their own god based religion where a period of each week is set aside to praise their god or ask for favours or protection. In Buddhism there is no worship in that sense as there is no god that saves, damns, controls or seeks praise..

We don't. We do not worship any dieties, not even the Buddha. We gather to hear and recite the Buddha's teachings and to perform group meditation.
