Muslims pay zakat because Allah ordered us to do it, in the Holy Qur'an.
Not only Islam even in Christianity.
Christianity is the message of forgiving and loving each other and Zakat is the Arabic word for giving poor people money and since Qur'an came in Arabic Mulims use it.

∙ 15y agoThe purpose of Zakat is as in charity. It is a good thing, actually... that you will feel great in yourself and that you know God is watching you and that He is aware of what you do. We need to feed the poor people as they deserve the necessities. God is testing us with those people to see if we actually care about them and is considerate. Plus, to see if we are willing to feed them for His sake in order to get His rewards.

Zakat is required as one of the five pillars of Islam. The ostensible reason is that if God has willed any particular Muslim to have enough wealth to be comfortable, such wealth was conferred with the understanding that the particular Muslim is to help God in providing for humanity.
