Zakat is the third of the Five Pillars of Islam. The others include Shahadah, Salah, Ramadan, Hajj. Zakat means 'charity' in Islam, or 'to give' and is basically the Pillar of giving away to others. Muslims literally live by the proverb, 'Better to give than receive'. They are also expected to give 2.5% of their income to charity each year but we could give other things, other than money, to charity. This includes necessities like food, clothes, money for shelters, etc. You would also pray for the people who aren't as fortunate as us, as this will not only help them, but prove to the Merciful Allah that you care about others and you aren't selfish, so you are worthy of his acceptance.

Paying Zakat (charity) 2.5% of annual saving is obligatory on all Muslims with basic savings being 7.5 tola gold along with some money. Apart from this, Islam encourages charity to poor relatives, orphans, needy, and travellers (people away from their native land). Allah Almighty has promised great reward for charitable people. Allah dislikes miserly people.
