Because the blood flowing through arteries is under a far higher amount of pressure than the blood in veins. Therefore, arteries need to be able to withstand that pressure.

Arteries appear bigger in size from the outside because yes they do need to be thicker and more elastic than veins because of the amount of blood and pressure in them.... but actually the inside "tube" if you will is actually smaller than that of vein... meaning if you cut then both in half you would see a bigger opening in a vein. This is because the blood leaving the heart must go all over the body needing to be under a higher pressure than when coming back to they heart. The smaller inside of the artery makes it easier for the body to keep the blood under pressure and moving.

What do you say that larger lymph vessels are comparable to veins rather than arteries?

Veins have wider lumens than arteries. Veins have thin muscular walls since low pressured blood passes through veins. the walls of the veins however have the same components as in arteries, that is, they have a muscular wall, a connective tissue wall, an endothelium and a layer of elastic tissue. Since arteries experience higher pressured blood the muscular player is much thicker than the one in the veins. therefore, the lumen of the artery is much smaller than that of the vein. Therefore, since lymphatic materials must pass through lymph vessels having the materials being somewhat large, a wider lumen is needed, like that of the veins.

Which is larger retinal arteries or retinal veins?

Retinal veins are larger than retinal arteries. Retinal veins are between 2/3 to 3/4 times larger than the arteries of the retina. Retinal vein are also darker red then the arteries.

What is the amount of muscle in veins and arteries?

The amount of muscle in veins and arteries varies in the sense that arteries are more muscular than veins to give them extra elasticity and strength to deal with surges of blood.

Why do most tissues have a greater supply of capillaries than veins and arteries?

Capillaries service cells, arteries and veins transport blood to and from capillaries, respectively.

Are veins larger than arteries?

in general no. ---------------- Answer #2 Actually yes they are. You have to keep in mind to compare same-action veins with same-action arteries. You could easily compare a vein in the foot to an artery near the heart and the artery will obviously be larger. However compare a vein near the heart to an artery near the heart and the vein is actually larger in circumference. By thickness an Artery is technically larger because it has to have thicker walls in order to transport oxygenated blood at a high pressure. Veins have thinner walls(they transport the same amount of blood but at lower pressures than arteries) but are actually slightly larger than arteries in circumference. If you were to think of them like pipes, they would be ranked from largest to smallest as: -Vein(smaller veins are known as venules.) -Artery(smaller arteries are known as arterioles.) -Capillary(smallest of ALL blood transporting tubules.) Keep in mind Veins transport un-oxygenated blood back to the lungs for re-oxygenation while arteries carry oxygenated blood to the vital organs. Capillaries are like little side streets that help feed blood to the necessary parts of your body that aren't on the main highways. Varicose or Spider-veins are actually not veins but Capillaries that have risen up to the surface of the skin and often broken due to either trauma or pressure.

Are veins thicker than arteries?

The tunica media is thicker in arteries than in veins.

Are the walls in arteries thicker than the walls in veins?

The arterial walls are thicker because they need to withstand the pressure coming from the heart.

Is the arteries bigger or smaller than capillaries?

Veins are bigger (:

How do artries and veins work?

Veins are bigger and thicker than artires

Are arteries thicker and stronger than veins?

Yes! The aorta is the largest artery.

Do arteries have the same structure but much thicker walls than veins?

yes

Are arteries thicker and stronger than veins and have two major properties?

Yes, Arteries are stronger and thicker than veins because they get more pressure from the heart. Arteries take blood away from the heart. Veins take blood toward the heart. The two major properties of artieries are their elasticity and contactility.

Is the wall of an artery thicker than that of a vein?

Yes. For equivalently sized arteries and veins, arterial walls are significantly thicker.

Contrast the structure of veins and arteries for thickness of muscle and elastic tissue?

The more pressure it uses, the thicker the walls will be. Veins have very low pressure which means they have thin walls and vice/versa for arteries which have a higher pressure and thicker walls than veins.

Which blood vessel muscle layer is usually thicker in the arteries than in veins?

Tunica media

Why is arteries has thick walled than viens?

All arteries have thicker wall than veins because they have to resist the pressure of the blood being pumped from the heart
