It is not that Australians want the Queen to be their leader. It is more a matter of practicality. The Westminster system on which Australia's government is founded works perfectly fine. Why spend billions of dollars changing emblems, regalia and the constitution just so people can be governed by a "president" rather than a "prime minister"? It would be a gigantic waste of money and resources to change a system that is running quite efficiently.

The system as it is works well as it is, Australia has one of the most stable governments in the world. The fact is that we can cut any political ties we have with Britain any time we chose. Australia can even do this without changing anything to the way things are being run at present by simply changing the name of the governor general to President And having that office maintain the same role as it now maintains, with the difference being that he reports to the people of Australia rather then the monarch of Britain. Attempts have been made to turn Australia into a republic, Australian threw it back in the faces of the politicians as they were afraid that carefully crafted changes to the constitution may upset the stability that we have enjoyed in this country for such a long time. Many people in Australia have backgrounds in country's where political stability is even today still a dream. Australians by nature dont seem to trust in the cincerity of their politicians and show this by nearly always saying no to constitutional changes.
