I have High Functioning Autism and I have laughed by myself for all my life. usually because I think of something funny that has been on my mind for a while, this is usually not seen as funny by most other people.

I don't know why I laugh at things left in my memory or why my humour is different but I see it merely as a difference and there is as much need explaining it as there is why Neurotypical("normal") people do many things me and other autistic people see as strange.

Autistic people struggle with social and communication skills, this plus sensory issues can mean that social interaction is a lot more difficult for Autistic people to cope with.

Even simple things like looking at another person can be hugely difficult for an Autistic person, the smallest variations in eye contact can send huge social cues to neurotypical people so Autistic people are constantly aware of their eye contact - that's just one tiny aspect of social interaction, consider the many aspects involved in body language, verbal language, maintaining appropriate behavior, finding shared interests, knowing what to talk about...etc. etc. all on top of dealing with sensory issues. Autistic children are often more severely effected so this can be more difficult.

Autistic children can also be more in their own heads, they don't reach out socially as much as they may do when they become adults and don't know social rules about interacting with other people. They may be more concerned with perusing their own interests and in their own company than having to interact with other people which would mean doing something they're not so interested in and dealing with all the social difficulties.

Do autistic kids like learning?

Yes, autistic children like learning. Most children enjoy learning because it is what they are designed to do, to learn in order to develop and grow. Autistic children may enjoy learning more if learning about something that interests them, autistic people often have 'special interests' that they spend a lot of time and effort learning about and can become expert in.

Can an autistic person make a child?

Yes, Autistic people can 'make' a child just like anyone else.Autism is a neurological variation, it doesn't prevent someone from reproducing just like a person of any other neurology. Autistic people are more likely to have Autistic offspring, especially if both mother and father are Autistic, but can also have children of different neurologies.

Do autistic children have eating disorders?

Some are, but eatind disorders do tend to affect autistic children a little bit less (statistically speaking) that non-autistic children. Some believe this is because they are less influenced by society around them.

Is autism only in children?

No, Autism is not only in children.Autism is a neurological difference, a person is born Autistic just like a person is born neurotypical. An Autistic person will always be Autistic and thus become an Autistic adult. Autistic people often improve over time, learning social and communication skills as well as learning to cope with or mask autism characteristics in order to fit in to neurotypical society. Autistic adults often fit in better than children.

How differently do they treat autism in America than England?

In short, very differently. In England we have the Autism Act which ensures all Autistic people have a pathway to diagnosis, although there's limited support for Autistic people government staff are supposed to be trained to understand Autistic people, Autistic people don't face healthcare discrimination like in the US where they may be expected to pay more for health insurance, and there are anti-discrimination laws in place. In England we tend to me a lot more accepting of Autistic people. In America there is a lot of scare tactics being used by people like Autism Speaks to make money out of families with Autistic children - Autistic parents are expected to spend thousands and allow their children to be tortured to make them 'normal'. Autistic people can face a lot more discrimination both in terms of employment and healthcare, and generally within society people consider Autistic people to be less than neurotypical people and there are stereotypes about Autistic people being mass shooters or otherwise violent. Often Autistic children are murdered by their parents and there is such a problem of ableism around Autism that people support the murders. I'm Autistic and live in the UK, but I will be moving to the US to live with my Autistic husband - the difference in attitudes between the two countries is as different as chalk and cheese.

Do autistic people have autistic children?

Yes this is possible but this depends on how much autism the father has and so then it may go to the child in the mothers womb and this also depends if the mother has autism . Hope this helped:D

Do you say autistic children or autism children?

You would say Autistic children.Although person-first language is considered politically correct for most disabilities, for example 'person with Down Syndrome', with autism identity-first language is considered to be correct. Thus it is in fact 'Autistic children' and not 'children with autism' - although always respect the individuals preferred term.Identity-first language isn't defining someone by their condition but recognizing it as part of who they are, much like you would say 'gay person' or 'African-American person'.

Should people treat autism as a tragedy?

Many parents do struggle with their autistic child and are concerned about their future. Autism doesn't mean a child/adult who is mentally handicapped. Autistic brains think different and many autistic people only deserved to be understood and not treated like they're sick or handicapped. Autistic children/adults are not sick or handicapped. Many parents should try to understand their autistic child instead of being scared all the time.

Does gymnastics help an autistic child?

I wouldn't reccomend it. I have a severly autistic cousin. autistic children tend not to listen to instruction very well. I'de be afraid that the child would get hurt. Try either horse-back riding or music. They are many places where disabled children can ride and it really makes them happy and its safe. My cousin love smusic though. He connects with it very well and it helps him understand things better.
