Beacause they need wings to fly to their food. The only reason they are in catipiller form when they hatch they don't have enough nuitrients to have wings yet. So they eat.

Butterflies are able to fly in temperatures that range from cool to hot. Butterflies must keep their body temperature within an optimum range. Butterflies keep warm by shivering their wings or lying in the warm sun. If the temperature is over 108 degrees Fahrenheit, butterflies many need to cool down in order to fly.

Spots, stripes, "eyes", or other patterns are helpful to the butterfly, because they protect them from predators because of warning colors (red, yellow, black, orange). Another use for patterned wings are for camo, or camouflage. I hope that I answered your question as simply as possible! -Betty

Butterflies flap their wings for two main reasons. Butterflies will flap or shiver their wings when they are too cold and they also flap their wings to fly.

Butterflies will occasionally shake their bodies and wings for the same reason that dogs do. This is to get any debris or dirt off of them.
