The cell membrane surrounds the cytoplasm of a cell and, in animal cells, physically separates the intracellular components from the extracellular environment, thereby serving a function similar to that of skin. In fungi, some bacteria, and plants, an additional cell wall forms the outermost boundary; however, the cell wall plays mostly a mechanical support role rather than a role as a selective boundary. The cell membrane also plays a role in anchoring the cytoskeleton to provide shape to the cell, and in attaching to the extracellular matrix to help group cells together in the formation of tissues. The barrier is selectively permeable and able to regulate what enters and exits the cell, thus facilitating the transport of materials needed for survival. The movement of substances across the membrane can be either passive, occurring without the input of cellular energy, or active, requiring the cell to expend energy in moving it. The membrane also maintains the cell potential. Specific proteins embedded in the cell membrane can act as molecular signals that allow cells to communicate with each other. Protein receptors are found ubiquitously and function to receive signals from both the environment and other cells. These signals are transducedinto a form that the cell can use to directly effect a response. Other proteins on the surface of the cell membrane serve as "markers" that identify a cell to other cells. The interaction of these markers with their respective receptors forms the basis of cell-cell interaction in the immune system

Does plant cells need a cell membrane?

Yes plant cells need a cell membrane. In addition to the cell membrane they also have a cell wall. Animal cells however do not have a cell wall but merely a membrane. A cell is not able to live without a membrane as it holds the organelles and cytoplasm in place.

Despite differences in the size and shape all cells have cytoplasm and a?

cell membrane!!! not ribosomes! -wrong plant cells have cell walls and animal cells have cell membrane, it might seem right but it is wrong. Nearly all cells have a mitochondrion.^ While the answer above is correct, the real answer is Cell Membrane. So all cells have cytoplasm, AND cell membranes.

What kinds of cells have a cell membrane?

All cells have a cell membrane! Only "plant cells" have a cell wall, and a cell membrane!

What cells do you find a cell membrane?

There are no cells in a cell membrane.,

What kind of cell have cell membrane?

All cells have a cell membrane! Only "plant cells" have a cell wall, and a cell membrane!

Is cell membrane a plant cell?

There is a cell membrane in plant cells and in animal cells.

What cell have a cell membrane?

normally prokaryotic do not cells have a cell membrane. eukaryotic cells do.

Where is the cell membrane located in cells that did not have cell walls?

Plant cells contain both a cell membrane and a cell wall. Animal cells contain only a cell membrane. For an animal cell, the cell membrane is the outermost layer of the cell.

What structure do all cells need?

they all need a nucleus (the brain of the cell), a cell membrane and cytoplasm.

Do helper t cells have a cell membrane?

All cells have a cell membrane.

Do prokaryotic cells have no cell membrane?

yes prokaryotic cells have cell membrane

Which structure is in both plant cells and animal cells controls the passage of substances into and out of cells?

The cell membrane is specially adapted, as it is selectively permeable.
