oxygen debt. more oxygen is needed than what is being supplied. the body then begins anaerobic respiration (the cells "breathe" for you). a result of anaerobic respiration is lactic acid. lactic acid is that soreness feeling you get after a hard workout

They are unable to produce sufficient amount of ATP and cannot contract.

There are two types of muscles, red muscles and white muscles. Red muscles perform aerobic respiration while white muscles perform anaerobic respiration. Usually, our red muscles do most of the activity but in case of strenuous activities, our red muscles are unable to meet the energy demand and shortage of oxygen happens. At such times, our white muscles perform anaerobic respiration. In this kind of respiration, lactic acid is produced which gets accumulated in the muscles and causes cramps.

Why does your tongue get sore when you have low iron?

because the tongue is a muscle. Low iron causes the hemoglobin (what binds oxygen to red blood cells) to be low. This leads to the muscles not getting enough oxygen. When muscles do not get enough oxygen they tend to ache and cramp easily.

What happens when muscles are exercised extensively in the absence of sufficient oxygen?

When muscles are exercised extensively in the absence of sufficient oxygen lactic acid is produced. When glycolysis occurs a molecule of glucose is split, two molecules of pyruvic acid are made, and some ATP is produced.
