Why do people exchange Christmas gifts?

The are symbolic of the gifts which the Wise Men presented to the infant Jesus. It is a shame that the gifts given today are more important for the reason for there being given.


I think it's something to do with the gifts that people brought baby Jesus? That might be what it is, might be something completely different!
