The public system caters to the lowest common denominator and thus brings down the rest of the students. Our nation will become a nation of idiots if we don't change the school system.

We home-school our children because the "Blue Ribbon" school they were attending catered to the problem child. Even though the school had high test scores, it still had problem children who took away from the learning experience of the regular kids, and the kids with a higher intellect. The "gifted and talented" program was a whopping 1 hour every two weeks. The rest of the time was spent standing in lines "learning" how to eat lunch or go to recess.

We also home-school our kids because God is being forced out of their lives. We could not say Merry Christmas or even have red and green plates at the "holiday" party because we might offend someone. That being said, it was fine to celebrate Islam and Kwanzaa and every other religion, but not the religion that our country was founded on. "In God We Trust"

We don't live in the country. We aren't anarchists. We just want our children to be treated as they should - with respect. They should be taught to learn, not how to stand in line.

We home-school our kids because we want them to form a life long love of learning. Our daughter lost her spirit to learn as soon as she started going to the public school system and it has been a struggle to get it back.

Our daughter still can't spell due to the insane ways the public school was teaching spelling...

There could be so many reasons for home schooling their children. They want to make their children safe from the unsafe physical environment of public schools. They desire to spend quality time with their kids with a concentration on their educational needs. And finally one main reason of homeschooling them is that they were themselves homeschooled formerly. Like I know a person who was studying from UK Open College and now he has enrolled his kid in the same institute. So it is just like a school becomes your family school.

Some children may be a little lazy when it comes to waking up in order to go to school, but mostly many children may have promblems with other peers or may have trouble tring to fit in. Or bad social skills, when all of their friends have boyfriends or girlfriends, and they don't.

Answer

I homeschooled up until seventh grade, and then I went to school. I went back to homeschooling in tenth. I personally wanted to do that because I felt that though I loved being around my friends, I found that was all there was to my school experience and I was not being challenged academically; I was bored in most of my classes and thought too much time was wasted. I also thought the environment of school was detrimental. Everyone has their reasons; those were mine.

I'm a homeschooled kid, so here's my guess:

People choose homeschooling because it takes the student away from bad influences. Homeschoolers usually have better grades, and have more time to advance at the things they like, such as drawing, or playing an instrument. It's also easier to stay faithful in your religion when you're homeschooled.

Children are home-schooled for various reasons.

Some are home-schooled because:

  • Their parents have stricter religious beliefs that public schooling wouldn't offer to teach the child(ren) at hand.
  • The schooling in the child(ren)'s area is below par and/or a dangerous environment.
  • They have medical needs and treatment isn't being met properly in public schools.
  • The child or children are having trouble dealing with their classmates (i.e., bullying), or trouble concentrating because of classmates (i.e., schoolyard drama).
  • The child(ren) excel(s) academically at home as opposed to being in public school, so the parents nurture that in the child(ren). (Possibly because the parents know what the child(ren)'s strong and weak points are, and are possibly better fit to teach them, in that sense.)
  • A combination of the reasons listed, and so on.

Because their parents believe it is a safer environment and sometimes because the kids are having trouble in school and need closer attention.
