The attack on Lindisfarne on june 8. 793 AD cast a shadow on the perception of the Vikings for the next twelve centuries. Not until the 1890s did scholars outside Scandinavia begin seriously to reassess the achievements of the Vikings, recognizing their artistry, technological skills, and seamanship.
For 12 centuries the catholic church painted the Vikings up as being demon worswhippers. So in short. because of mudslinging from the opposition and generally bad PR.
