Because desire is greater than fear!

Many of the drugs they use produce effects that are pleasurable at first, but if they take them long enough, their bodies and minds then become dependent on them and they continue to use them, even when they no longer are getting the pleasure. They keep trying to attain the pleasure they felt the first few times, but it is no longer available even with higher and higher doses.

The addiction (from the illegal drugs that are addictive), and the repeated use of these strong drugs, cause them to lose insight and to be no longer able to see that the risks are outweighing the initially perceived benefits. At the "point of no return," which in some people is very soon after beginning the use, depending on the drug, the goal at that point is merely to avoid the unpleasant and painful effects of going without the drug.

People use "legal" drugs everyday. The Pharmaceutical industry is based on the consumption of compounds (drugs) that have been scientifically tested and proven to have a benefit in treating the causes, and symptoms, of diseases and illnesses, ranging anywhere from the common cold, to the most aggressive types of CANCER. Prescription medications are also VERY beneficial in the treatment of MANY types of behavioral disorders including but certainly not limited to: Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar disorder, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, Dementia, Alzhiemers, and of course general stress brought on by situations we as humans are forced to deal with in our everyday lives.

The Legality or Illegality of any drug is determined by the Legislation that is passed by Congress in conjunction with the recommendation of the Federal Drug Administration (FDA). ANY Drug could be made illegal if a Law is passed making it so! Illegal or not is a combination of Political, Social, and Medical factors.

Illegal drugs of today, were not necessarily ALWAYS illegal. For example Cocaine used to be LEGAL. It was supposedly a component of Coca-Cola! Coke's advertising talked about the "LIFT" you got from drinking Coke! Also Morphine was Legal at one time.

You may also know that Marijuana was once totally legalin the USA...and is now making a comeback, being legalized in SOME State Jurisdictions, for medical uses only. Unfortunately for its users it is STILL illegal at a Federal level in all States.

People mainly start using illegal drugs because the drugs give them a feeling of great pleasure, euphoria. Then, after using them for a while their bodies become addicted to them and the must take the drugs to avoid the discomfort that comes from withdrawing from them.
