The better to swim with, large forepaws to help pull them through the water at surprisingly fast speeds, and the back legs and paws are used as rudders! ON ice, they help evenly distribute their massive weight over thin ice while walking, muffle their footsteps so they can hunt in a "stealth mode" and give good traction on the ice as well. Their paw can measure a foot across and has tufts of hair in between the black pads, which have little bumps called "papillae", these help with traction.

Big feet work as snowshoes and paddles, helping the animal travel efficiently on both snow and through water. Big feet help to distribute their weight as they walk on thin ice in the arctic waters. Big feet stop them from sinking into the snow, and help them swim.

The fur on their feet collects heat in their hollow bristles like on the rest of the body! They also use them when swimming like ducks. Its also so that they don't fall to deeply into the soft snow.
