The metal shades have holes in the top for a few reasons. The hole is normally the attaching point to the lamp itself and the hole is there to allow hot air to escape the fixture. If the air was trapped and couldn't get out the bulb would over heat and the filament would fracture
Heat generated by the lamp rises and the holes allow ventilation, the heat escapes through the holes and prevents the lamp overheating.
