The large bill of the toucan is used primarily for feeding. Toucans use their bills to reach fruits on branches that may be just out of the birds' reach because the branch is too flimsy to support their weight. It has also been suggested that toucans use their bills to reach fruits and other tasty foods and toss them to one another during a mating ritual. The toucan's bill does not appear to be used as a weapon, since much of it is air and therefore it would be useless to be used in this way.
