Your question can't be completely answered. To a Sectarian Christian, a Muslim sins because he's not a Christian. To Muslims, someone who never prays is a sinner . To a Feminist, you are sinning if you don't recognize women or are a man. You have to define your viewpoint before you ask why people do what they do- to an Atheist, you cannot sin. But the Old English word's definition is "To break the law". So, to make intolerant Atheists happy, you must say, "Why do people Break the Law?"

Another Answer

So basically, the reason people do this is debated. Atheists cannot completely answer this question. Christians, Muslims, and Jews say Man disobeyed God and thus we are inherently "Sinful", Which is actually nicer to say than "Criminals", although that would also fit. I don't know what else to tell you.

Sin is not just something that we do but that what we do is also a symptom of a deeper problem. This it calls the power of sin which is ultimately out of our control to fix. This is very offensive to many but that's the way it is. Only fairy stories have faultless heroes .

Another answer

In the universal language of mind, a sin is a mistake where no learning has occurred and therefore it will be repeated. Mistakes are a part of learning.

The problem is the fact that once we "sin," or make a mistake, we do not tend to learn from it. Often many people commit the same acts again and again. If you lie once, there is a probable chance that you will lie again. We sin because we are human beings. No human being is perfect. If you are perfect, then you have never sinned. There is not one person on this earth who has never made a mistake in their life.

It's likely that human action and behavior extend much farther back in time than the concept of "sin" itself. From this chronological point of view, the question may be rephrased as "Why have we imposed a concept of sin on what humans do?" (and have been likely doing all along...) So the question in a broader sense is "Why have humans created (or been handed by a divine power) a set of rules (including a set of things that "shouldn't be done" ie sins) only to continually break them?"

Given the above, some answers to the question:

-the old addage, "because rules are made to be broken"

-from an evolutionary point of view, (1) societies that had a set of "reasonable" rules of conduct survived and those that did not (eg wanton recklessness was permitted), did not survive and, as a refinement of (1), (2) societies whose members NEVER broke the rules also did not survive (eg if you NEVER behave recklessly you're less likely to produce an accidental birth (for example) which, if current figures on this are accurate throughout history, account for some 50% of newborns--in short, fewer births could well mean less chance of the society surviving)

-the TENSION between the individual ego and the (egoless) self-sacrifice to society is always going to be there; it sometimes manifests itself in favor of the ego by people breaking the rules, committing a sin; sometimes the tension swings the other way and an individual will sacrifice themselves completely; a PERFECT balance is not practical or possible--there will always be oscillations about the mean tension

Christian theology, on the other hand, posits that man sins because his nature rebels against the will of his Creator. The individual self-will revolves around the fulfillment of self-centered desires of a physical, social, economic, and psychological nature. But, again according to the tenets of Christianity, the will of the Creator is for the ultimate good of all men. It is here that the tension between the individual ego (self-will) and the will of the Creator (requiring self-sacrifice) manifests itself. When a man follows the urges of his self-will even though doing so violates the manifest will of the Creator, the resulting action is what Christian teaching calls sin. The continual battle within the individual between his self-will and the divine will, and the tendency to sin despite the Christian's conviction that he should not, is termed concupiscience. While behaviors in opposition to God's likely have been persistently present, it was only with the dawning awareness of the concept of sin that man became liable for his choices. From a Christian standpoint, sin is impossible unless one is aware that the action considered is in violation of the will of God. Further, Christian teaching disputes the suggestion that man, either individually or collectively, can benefit from sinful behavior. The Christian God is all-knowing and all-good; his commands, therefore, are perfect in their intent. Here, a Christian would differentiate between reckless behavior, such as that which may lead to an accidental birth within marriage, and sinful behavior, such as engaging in premarital sex. While the former may be reckless, it is by no means sinful according to Christian teaching. Christians believe that all mankind sins because we are born with a sin nature. This was the result of the fall of Adam and Eve from the garden as spoken of in Genesis 3. Psalms 51:5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

Sin is a part of every day life because when Adam and Eve disobeyed God, they put a sin curse on the rest of humanity. Those two were made perfect but rebelled and became sinners. Everyone else is born with a sinful nature meaning it's impossible for us not to sin. Even babies who can't talk have a sin curse. It is like your brain, you're born with it and it effects your life greatly. that's why only Jesus could die for us, because he didn't have an earthly father, (the sin curse comes through man) he was born without the sin curse and could so choose whether or not to sin. (he didn't sin) Now, I'm not saying if you punch someone it's the curse's fault. We still have free will, it's just our nature to want to, and often times do choose to sin. No one can go to heaven only by their deeds. Through believing in Jesus alone can you be saved. When you become a Christian, God erases that sin. you continue to sin, but God forgives you and allows you to go to heaven when you die.

The sin of Adam and Eve as our first parents radically altered human nature, losing the preternatural gifts and introducing pain, suffering, death and the darkening of the intellect and will. This fall is called "Original Sin" by Catholic theologians.

Sin is a choice. Technically, it is possible not to sin. However, because of the darkening of man's intellect and will, man has lost despotic control over his lower passions and mental faculties. Because of this, man sometimes makes bad choices, choices that are wrongly based or influenced by emotions, passions or bad thinking. When people choose to act in a way that is not in accordance to their own nature or the dictates of God, a sin is committed. People are liable to sin because of their damaged nature - we are liable to rebel against our own nature (restrictions, nature dictates, etc) and the dictates of God. Only those that strive to conform themselves to both the natural and divine law can be free from sin, but even they must be vigilant and pray, for the struggle is constant throughout life.

You probably heard this story. Adam and Eve were in a garden. God said they could eat anything except from the tree of knowledge of good and evil. That is when Satan disguised himself as a serpent and told Eve to disobey God and eat what I call the bad apple. Eve listened to Satan. That made us sin and there you go. That is why we sin. But they can be forgiven because Jesus died on the cross. If he didn't die for us we all would go to hell.

A.

According to christian tradition Jesus died on the cross for all the sins of Mankind. If we wouldn't sin, his death would be in vain, wouldn't it?

The existence of sin is part of what, in philosophy, is called the problem of evil and suffering. If God is all-powerful, all-knowing, all good, and the sole creator of the world, then why is there evil and suffering? The problem can only be resolved if at least one of these propositions is false. Therefore if God is all-powerful, he is either not all-knowing and is therefore unaware of all the evil in the world, or he is not all-good and is unconcerned about all. The alternative explanation is that God does not even exist, as many people now believe.

When you do something bad it is sin. So when you do something that causes bad stuff you cause sin.

AnswerAdam and Eve were originally perfect until they sinned. Sin is caused by our (fallen) human nature. AnswerSin is what people believe to be a measure of what they did wrong in their lives.

You do not cause sin by doing something wrong, you believe you have sinned, and so you put the blame upon yourself.

Everyone makes mistakes. No one is absolutely perfect. Does this mean everyone has sinned? Well that would be unfortunate.

Answer:

Sin is caused by "selfishness."

"...sin is the transgression of the law." (I John 3:4)

Sin is "the failure to love and care about others." Sin is "selfish pursuits that offend others." Sin is "anger and festering hatred -- premeditated murder." Sin is "lying and stealing from others for selfish gain." Sin is "the lustful betrayal of one's marriage and family." Sin is "forgetting one's Creator... and the pursuit of false gods -- a selfish pursuit that's offensive to God."

Sin is caused by man's selfish nature -- his failure to care for, and about the well-being of others.

Sin is caused by "mankind's general worldwide lack of outgoing love for his fellowman."

Christians sin for the same reason that all men sin - they have been born with a sin nature. That does not disappear when they become a Christian, but their sins are not held against them if they repent of them. They also have additional strength (Christ) to call on when tempted to sin.

----

1 John 1:8-10 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Romans 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

Romans 4:7-8 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.

Romans 5:19 For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Romans 5:20 Moreover the law entered, that the offence might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound:

Romans 6:14 For sin shall not have dominion over you: for ye are not under the law, but under grace.

Galatians 3:22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.

Galatians 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works, lest anyone should boast.

God has given us free will (Deuteronomy 30:15-20), which includes the ability to sin. We are tested by our competing inclinations, desires, emotions etc., and we choose whether to obey God's will and His ways, or to ignore them.

Because since the first mans rebellion against God, all his descendants are plagued with sin and are conceived in depravity, rebellion against God. Man sins because he is a sinner at heart.

Is an atheist having a Christian friend a sin?

For an atheist, there is no sin in having a Christian friend. Nor should it ever be regarded as a sin for a Christian to have an atheist friend, a Muslim friend or, for example, a Buddhist friend.
