Catholic AnswerIn the normal course of events, you need confirmation to be saved. It is not strictly necessary but it is the normal completion of your baptism. In the eastern Rites of the Church, confirmation and Holy Communion are given to a newborn infant at the same time as Baptism. Confirmation, in a very real sense, completes baptism and gives you the graces to be an adult Christian and to witness to your faith, which is a necessary part of working out your salvation.

AnswerConfirmation is the sacrament where an individual receives the Holy Spirit. Jesus before he died told the apostles he would send the Holy Spirit to give them further information, training and insight into God and his will.

Baptism is also when someone receives the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is called this because the person confirms their willingness to be involved in the church and let the Holy Spirit work through them. This is why often it is a sacrament for teenagers, because it is an adult decision and concept that children would find tricky (adults do too!)
