The ecumenical calender is based upon biblical events and as such is not restricted to the solar calendar. As such the seasons differ in length and rarely line up with the popular celebrating of a season. For this reason to help people of the Christian faith better track the season of advent up to Christmas the calendar is designed to act as a daily reminder that we are approaching the time when we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ!

Traditionally, an advent calendar has 24 doors representing the 24 days in December before Christmas Day. Each day, a child opens each door to find a piece of chocolate to eat and then will work their way through the days leading up until Christmas Day.
