When Prince Albert Came over from Norway He brought chrismas trees, then Queen Victoria placed candles on the tree to illuminate it but still thought it as rather dull.

She bought colourfull balls of glass (Most likely from Italy.) and paid people to paint them with seens of Christmas.

When Prince Albert died, Queen Vic carried on getting trees & baubals, to remember Albert by. This trend caught on as all things did in the 1800s and earlier, and normal Victorians that could afford it started to use the same ideas as Victoria.

Answer

The beautiful glass balls that decorate Christmas trees were invented in Germany. Hans Greiner began producing glass ornaments in the shapes of fruit and nuts in 1847 in the small German town of Lauscha. The inside of the ornaments was coated with silvery substances made first from Mercury and lead and later from a silver nitrate compound. The most beautiful glass ornaments are still those made in Germany. Their purpose is to decorate the tree and delight all those who see it.
