Mainly, it is for traction, but some wear these slippers that have leather soles. That being said, I would recommend that you just go barefoot- I have for 10 years(Gymnast)... And so when you point your toes the judges can see

It's a standard health and safety procedure, trainers or plimsoles are a must, they also support your body and correct your posture so you are less likely to do any body damage.
