It has something to do with an oil gland in the sphincter of the skunk that they use as a defense from predators. An oil that creates a foul odor predators don't like allows the skunks to escape from danger.

∙ 14y agoSkunks give of a stinky smell because they are protecting themselves. When the animal is frightened, it can explosively release the musk, which, along with stamping its feet and turning its back, tells a predator to back off.

Actually, although many people believe that skunks smell bad, they usually don't. Skunks really don't like the scent of their rancid spray, so they try their best to avoid getting it on themselves. Who can blame em?
