It is used for transporting sensitive data, in organizations like the military, so that hackers cannot access the data. Of course, there are ways of "Brute Forcing" the data to decrypt it, which is often used is someone, like a hacker, is trying to access the data.
There are also different "levels" of encryption. Such as:
8-bit
16-bit
32-bit
64-bit
128-bit
And so on....
The higher the level of encryption, the harder the data is to decrypt.
