Why does the colors of the leaves change?

The trees change color in winter (some trees) because the temperature inhibits the synthesis of chlorophyll and therefore the carotenoids or the xanthophyll pigments become in excess in comparison to the chlorophyll resulting in giving different color to the tree.

Leaves have chlorophyll in them, making them green. When winter comes, the chlorophyll leaves the leaves, making the leaves appear orange or yellow. The leaves have those colors in them before, but the lack of green makes it come out. In other leaves. the ones that turn purple or red, there is glucose still trapped in the leaf, and the cold frosts make the glucose turn red. The browns are simply the waste left over.
