Direct mail is a marketing term used by the US postal services to describe unofficial mail such as restaurant menus, which are seen as junk by some people.
Answers.com is an international community, therefore we use the universal terms, junk and spam, rather than the US national terms. In the UK, Australia, France, Germany and so on, it is simply called "junk" and you will not hear the term "direct mail" there.
Using the universal terms means everyone in the world knows what it is for.
