Unlike her brother, Atticus, Alexandra is primarily concerned with appearances. They are from old southern gentry and she is against anything that she feels will lessen the Finch family name. Unfortunately, southern gentry at that time did not consider socializing with black people proper etiquette. She's unhappy about her brother crossing the racial barrier to defend a black man and feels that Jem attending the church will re-enforce what she believes is a bad image.

Aunt Alexandria believes that Calpurnia's presence is hindering Scout and Jem's moral upbringing. She thinks sending Calpurnia away will help instill her own values in the children. The metaphor of "killing a mockingbird" suggests that Aunt Alexandria wants to remove any influences that she deems as harmful.

Although Alexandra is of a different class than some of the southerners who exhibit blatant, racist behaviors, she is still a product of the deep south during the Jim Crow era. As a result, she does not believe in the mixing of the races and certainly doesn't believe Scout will ever come to be a proper southern white woman if she is raised by Calpurnia.

She is afraid Jem and Scout might not act as they should if there's not an adult figure with them. She also sees it would be a reward for Scout,as well as Jem, to get to go to church with Calpurnia(Scout wanted to visit Calpurnia to see how Cal's life was outside the Finch home.)
