The Mummies of Guanajuato are a number of naturally mummified bodies interred during a cholera outbreak around the city, in 1833. All of these mummies were disinterred between 1865 and 1958, when the state law required relatives to pay a tax in order to keep the bodies in the cemetery. If the relatives could not pay this tax, they would lose the right to the burial place, and the dead bodies were disinterred. Ninety percent of the bodies in the cemetery were disinterred because their relatives did not pay such tax.

There were several places. The most famous are the Egyptian pyramids, but only a small minority of (royal) mummies were put to rest there. Most were buried in the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, in subterranean graves dug out in the rock. Non-royal mummies were interred in dug-out tombs elsewhere. Mayan and Inca mummies have been found in caves high in the mountains where the cold climate preserved them.

The display of mummies in museums is complicated. On one hand, mummies should be kept in museums because there are so few mummies left that were not looted from their tombs, and we can learn a lot about the ancient Egyptians from the mummies left behind. They are very important tools to unlocking what the Egyptians thought and believed about death, the afterlife, life on Earth, and their general religion. However, the exhibition of mummies is complicated because, even though they are precious artifacts, they are also dead bodies of real people, removed from the place of their supposed eternal rest to be gawked at in museum galleries. This practice is slightly unethical when thought of in this manner. The exhibition of human remains in museums is something that museum professionals and museum scholars continue to grapple with and argue about today, and that will continue to be an issue long into the future.
