Why does a green t-shirt look green when viewed in white light?

White Light is made of all the colours of the spectrum (rainbow).
If we look at something, say, green (like grass) it looks green to us because the chlorophyll in the leaves absorbs all the sunlight that lands on it with the exception of green light which it reflects. Therefore this green light that reflects into our eyes makes us see the grass as green.
White objects, however, absorb no light and reflect all the colours back to us. As all the colours together make white light, we see the object (in your case, a T shirt) as white.
