The most common reason is that you have not configured the video card of your computer to display an image on the HDMI output.
You need an HDTV for it to work and the TV has to have an HDMI connection. Then you need to turn your HDTV to the location for the HDMI that was connected
I plugged the HDMI cable into the HDTV and into the PS3. Then I went to the settings for both the HDTV and the PS3 slim and set them for HDMI and sync. When it works right putting a disc into the PS3 will turn on the HDTV and also switch the HDTV over to that HDMI input rather than a cable box or similar item even if it was on the cable box when you last used the HDTV.
In order for the PS3 to work best on a HDTV you need to have or purchase either an HDMI or a component AV cable and connect the PS3 to the HDTV. The PS3 will play on a HDTV when it is connected with the AV cable that was provided, but it will not be in HD
The HDMI specification means that any HDMI cable will work equally well.
conect it to a computer You plug it into your HDTV input and into your PS3. Both the PS3 and the HDTV may have settings needing adjustment. Many devices including PCs Laptops, and even Photo Frames also have outputs like the PS3 to connect to a HDTV and connecting two devices with outputs will not work.
The HDMI cable should be plugged in to an HDTV. If you have a Laptop or PC with a HDMI plug slot on it is also so it can be plugged in to a HDTV and is an out HDMI PLUG SLOT like the one that is on the PS3. Any HDMI cable that has an HDMI logo will work. All HDMI products need to be tested and licensed by the HDMI organization. If a cable passes the test, it works. If HDMI cables work, they work as well as ANY other HDMI cable. The digital nature of the signal means that high cost cables do not deliver a better quality image than low cost cables. So, select the lowest cost cable in the store - it will be every bit as good as the most expensive.
The AV cable that comes with the PS3 is not for HDTV set up. You need to purchased a HDMI cable or a Sony PS3 component cable and then it should work.
If your TV is an HDTV with HDMI connection it is foolish not to spend the money to purchase and use the cable. The cheapest games are more than the cost of the cable and you would get much more from the system. It is what the PS3 was designed and the games it plays was designed for. The prices for HDTVs are low and you will be able to tell the difference if you upgrade your TV, but when you already have an HDTV you really need to add the HDMI cable. Of course a HDMI plug is for HDTVS and not Standard 480i TVs and the standard A/V cable that comes with a PS3 will work with the HDTV, just not with the same results.
Any working HDTV will work with your PS3. The level of maximum quality will differ however depending on the quality of your TV. Also you will need to own an HDMI cable to output to your HDTV in HD.
