Taking Care Of Your Sump Pump?

If you live in an older home, your home might use a sump pump as part of its sewage system. Some older homes also use a sump pump to prevent basement or crawlspace flooding. If your family’s plumbing system uses a sump pump, you need to complete regular maintenance tasks in order to keep your system in good working order. If you fail to complete these tasks, your system could fail. Sump pump repair can be extremely expensive, so it is best to avoid this cost if at all possible. Invest a little time in your sump pump system now, so that you do not have to invest a lot of money in it later. 1. Clean Out Your Sump Pump Periodically Overtime, deposits can build up in your sump pump. These deposits of sand, dirt, and minerals from your pipes, can damage your sump pump. There are chemical products available that promise to break down these deposits and keep your sump pump clean. If you have not been treating your sump pump regularly, however, you might want to have a specialist come out and clean it manually. Then you can begin a chemical cleaning regimen. 2. Check The Battery Many sump pumps have a battery back-up to help keep the system running if your home’s electrical system fails. You should periodically test the battery to make sure that it still holds a charge. A battery back-up is useless if it does not work properly. If you do not know how to test the battery, contact a plumber. Ask them how much they would charge for a quick battery check. This small maintenance cost could save you a considerable amount of money in the long term. 3. Consider A Plumbing Update In some municipalities, sump pumps are no longer allowed because they can overwhelm the city’s sewer system. Although these laws might only apply to new construction, you might have a harder time selling your home if you have an out-dated plumbing system. To find out how much it would cost to upgrade your plumbing system, ask several contractors for estimates.

How do you install a sump pump?

You simply buy a sump pump at the store:usually 100 or 90 dollars approximately(depends on the type you're buying.A submersible pump, automatic pump,or a waste pump-(pumps out waste and liquids sewerage.)Then you simply place it cautiously on the bassoon or sump tank floor.Caution: must be properly grounded or it will move around or make a loud banging noise when pumping. This is sometimes normal so don't worry a lot. Normal 89% of the time. Plug it in or use a ground protector depending how much power it uses or the type. Then test it by lifting the rod and activating the switch to test the pump.(If you don't have a sump tank, you can drill a hole in your basement floor.(takes some time)Take your time so your hole is even and straight and the floor is flat and not crocked. The pump will be crocked and can fall if the floor's not even. You'll need a bucket for the water and cement. Get a another pump in case of failure! Then take your bassoon tank (brought at the store) and set it down carefully. then if you haven't dug holes do so in the floor for water accumulations.Use some pipes for underground water and sewer water.(Can be from bathtub or sink/toilet liquids.DO NOT PUT WASTE LINE PIPES IN BASSOON. THE PUMP WILL NOT BE ABLE TO PUMP IT OUT! IT WILL CLOG UP THE PIPES! THE ODORS WILL BE HIGH!USE ONLY LIQUID LINES ONLY! THEN WAY THE SUMP TANK DOWN AND CEMENT IT AROUND THE OPENINGS OR LININGS.THEN WHEN DRY, PUT SUMP PUMP IN, PLUG IT IN AND PUT THE COVER OVER IT. MAKE SURE THE LID IS ON TIGHT AND PROPERLY AS ODORS WILL COME UP AND SMELL LIKE SEWER.Not A GOOD SMELL IF YA ASK ME, JUST NASTY I WANNA DROW UP!Run some water if it's connected to your bathroom water and test the pump too. Then you're done.

How To Know When A Sump Pump Will Help Dry Out Your Basement?

In homes across the country a damp basement is a fact of life many people live with. However, flowing water in any setting is problem that generally needs to be addressed at some point in time. While it is typical for basements and foundations to take on water during heavy rainfalls, a sump pump can prevent the water from entering through walls or even through the floor. The sump is generally a small pit that is deeper than the basement floor and operates on the premise that water seeks the lowest level. Once the sump fills up, a sump pump is used to transfer the rainwater from the basement to another area outside the confines of the house. Since the water being disposed of is usually storm run off, it can be pumped into yards or other areas without fear of contamination. However, local building codes should be consulted for any distance or draining regulations. A sump pump is rated by horsepower. Of course, a higher horsepower dictates a more powerful pump. Home owners need to make an observation on the flow of water into the sump during the heaviest flow times. The pump should be able to clear the sump before the water overflows in the basement area. Many sump pumps are submersible and are placed directly in the tiny pool of water. They are also equipped with a float switch. This float switch turns the pump on when it rises to a certain point, and turns the pump off when it falls to an acceptable level. In storms or rain seasons it is not uncommon for a pump to run on a consistent basis. Generally a damp basement can be solved by utilizing a sump pump and a dehumidifier together to regulate the climate. A sump pump is an extremely valuable tool to have in a house. Home owners need to be aware of the pump at all times though it will likely function for years without any attention or maintenance at all. Keeping a keen ear on the pump or checking it periodically will prevent the unit from failing when it is needed. Obviously, if the pump fails during a period when water is overflowing the sump, a major clean up will likely follow.
