The Tower of London is one of the most popular and imposing of London's historical sites. It comprises not one, but 20 towers, the oldest of which, the White Tower, dates back to the 11th century and the time of William the Conqueror. It is the Tower's evil reputation as a prison that ensures it remains a much visited tourist spot today, together with the rich and varied history that surrounds it.

Many stories associated with British history come from the Tower. In 1483 King Edward IV's two sons were murdered in the so-called Bloody Tower, and over two centuries later the skeletons of two little boys were found buried beneath steps in the White Tower, assumed to be the bodies of the princes.

There have been fortifications on the site of the Tower of London for around 2000 years. The Tower in its present form was started nearly 1000 years ago and is of great historical and architectural interest. It has in its time been a fort, Royal Palace, Menagerie and prison. Today it is a museum, houses the British Crown Jewels and even has a small military garrison. It is also one of London's major tourist attractions.

Tower of London is famous because it is a very historic place. Many kings and queens were executed here. I know three queens- Anne Boleyn, Katherine Howard and Jane Grey- that have been executed there. 2 of these were the queen of King Henry. Also, Henry had many of his advisers executed. The spirit of these are told to roam around here. In addition, Queen Elizabeth I was also imprisoned here!
