There is no historical tradition of gift giving during Channukah so you do not have to give or get presents. The practice of gift giving during Channukah is mainly specific to the US and Canada and is the result of the holiday falling in the same month as Christmas.

A Jewish boy becomes a Bar Mitzvah on his 13th birthday and this is the most important religious event in his life. Gifts are given when the boy has the ceremony to celebrate his becoming a Bar Mitzvah no differently than people give birthday presents.

A bat mitzvah is the female equivlant to the male bar mitzvah. Both ceremonies are seen as the changing point when the Jewish community sees the young woman or young man as being an adult who is morally and ethically responsible for her/her decisions and actions.

In the past 100 years Jewish communities began marking when a girl became recognized an adult with a special ceremony, just as they always had with young men. This was a break from traditional Jewish custom, which prohibited women from participating directly in religious services.

Today, in many Jewish communities, the bat mitzvah ceremony has become almost identical to the bar mitzvah ceremony for boys.
