There's no real explanation for the size of celestial bodies. What you have to appreciate is that the Earth, the moon and other plannets in our part of the solar system (Mercury, venus, mars) are relatively small compared to other"space things"

a) Many people perceive the moon to be bigger when close to the horizon, but this is an optical illusion. Not seen by all subjects.
b) there is a phenomenon called the Libration of the moon, and a very nice movie in 'moon' in wikipedia. (or under libration. )
