Why does water have a lower melting point than sodium oxide?
Sodium oxide has a high melting point because of the strength ofits bonds. Due to having strong bonds, they cannot be broken veryeasily.
Water has a lower melting point because it is soluble in manythings. However, naphthalene is not. Without being soluble in a lotsolutions the naphthalene has a higher melting …point because of howit's formed.
The melting point of a substance is based upon the polarity of the bonds that make up the substance. In water, the O-H bond has a difference in electronegativity of 1.4 (Pauli…ng's Scale) and in ammonia, the N-H bond has a difference in electronegativity of .9. Therefore, it takes more energy to break apart the O-H bond because the polarity is so great, and this is why it has a higher melting point than ammonia.
it is because the charge of the magnesium ion is 2+and oxide ion is 2- they attract each other more strongly than sodium ion is 1 and chloride ion is 1-.
Because it has a fourth shell which means it's valence electrons are further from the nucleus (protons) meaning that there is less attraction between it's electrons and proton…s; this obviously forms a weaker bond. Sodium has only 3 shells which means its valence electrons are closer to the nucleus.
aluminum oxide : Al2O3
It is 1132 °C
CaO - the attraction between a 2+ and a 2- ion is much stronger than between a + and a -. .
The melting point of caesium will be greater because of random, temporary dipoles caused by moving electrons called London dispersion forces. The bigger the electron cloud of …an atom, the greater chance there is for a temporary dipole to exist. Caesium atoms, with LDF happening more frequently, will be harder to drive apart, and the melting point is increased.
Water doesn't melt unless it's ice.
CaO has a double bond since there is a transfer of two electrons from the calcium to the oxygen. NaCl only has a single bond. Also, the EN difference between Ca and O is great…er compared to that of Na and Cl. This means there is a greater dipole-dipole force (polarity) present. Basically, it has a stronger attraction between its cations and anions.
The sodium ion has a 1+ charge and the chloride ion has a 1- charge. By comparison the magnesium ion has a 2+ charge and the oxide ion a 2- charge. Because the charge diff…erence is greater in magnesium oxide, the forces of attraction between the ions are greater. This makes the ions harder to move from their positions which is what happens when a substance melts. Additionally, the magnesium ion is smaller than the sodium ion and the oxide ion smaller than the chloride ion. This increases the density of the charges and makes forces of attraction even stronger.
Oxygen has weaker bonds between it's atoms compared to that of sodium which are obviously stronger
Much higher. Water melts around 1 0 C. At this temperature and much higher, sodium oxide is a solid.
Sodium has a melting point of 97.72 o C and rubidium has a melting point of 39.48 o C.
Melting and freezing are synonyms; impure water freeze at a lower temperature than pure water.
Water can't melt!!!
