Sun and chlorine added over time. Also, there is a different type of chlorine/shock for vinyl liners. If your pool liner is still in good condition but have a faded tile border, buy BorderLines adhesive tile borders. BorderLines offers several nice tile patterns that just peel and stick to any smooth surface and can be done in a short afternoon by one person. I did it to mine and got a few extra years out of my pool liner before it needed replaced, Wow does my pool look new again, check it out at www.poolsandwaterfalls.com Good Luck

One cause is a leak..

A small hole/tear in the liner allows water to get behind/under the liner. Now, without the water pressure pressing against it (or, with equal pressure above and below), the liner 'floats' away from the ground/wall. If you see an increase in the number or severity of the wrinkles, you likely have a small hole somewhere...

It would appear that the yellowing of the liner is caused by an ingredient in suncream - most noticeably the 40 and 50 protection levels.

This May(2009) had two pool-liners in our letting properties replaced. The one where there are generally more children is already stained (8 weeks!!) in some areas and I have been unable to remove it with any proprietary products.

No idea which chemical it is or what else to use to remove it.

Wood wall pools will often deteriorate faster than traditional galganized steel wall vinyl pools. Vinyl pools are the most economical where as concrete pools tend to be more luxurious. Can you replace coping on vinyl liner pool with stone?

Afraid not. Vinyl liner pools are built using "concrete receptor coping" into which the deck is poured. It also contains the "bead receptor" that the vinyl liner attaches to. Actually YES it can. You would want to do this during a liner replacement but it can be done. You would have to remove the concrete from around the perimeter of the pool, remove/ replace the "concrete receptor coping" with bead receiver, aluminum extrusion, form/pour a bond beam, then lay your stone. Not really an easy do it yourself job but it can be done.

Would it be OK to have quarter inch floor padding under the vinyl when converting from poured concrete to vinyl liner?

Inground Pools: How to Select the Right One?

Purchasing a pool is a large investment for any homeowner. There are several different types of inground pools available, so selecting the right one can be a challenge. Currently, fiberglass, concrete and vinyl liner inground pools are being sold. Comparing each type can make buying a pool much simpler. Fiberglass inground pools are a great choice for pool buyers. They are pre-constructed at a factory and shipped to the desired location in one piece. A customer simply selects their preferred size and shape from a catalog. Fiberglass pools are typically the most expensive pool on the market, but they last the longest. In the long run, a fiberglass pool will require less repair and fewer chemicals than other pool types. It usually takes only a few weeks to install a fiberglass pool from start to finish. The inside of fiberglass pools is smooth to the touch. For homeowners that desire more freedom designing their pool, then a concrete one would be the best option. Concrete inground pools are currently the most popular on the market. They are custom created by pool builders, which is great for customers who have a difficult yard shape. Concrete is usually less expensive than fiberglass, but requires more care over the years. Unlike fiberglass, a concrete pool is built in stages, so the construction time tends to be longer, usually one to three months. These pools come with a wide variety of finishes, from rough plaster to smooth tile. Less popular are vinyl liner inground pools. These pools are typically sold to the consumer in a kit form and put together by the owner. First, the ground must be excavated to fit the pool, and then it is placed inside. The sides of vinyl liner pools are constructed from steel. Once erected, they will be permanently supported by concrete. A vinyl liner is then spread over the sides and bottom. These pools are very popular in parts of the country where there are cold winters, as they can be easily drained and covered until the weather warms back up. Swimmers enjoy the smooth surface of the liner, but it can accrue more damage than other pools types.

Are vinyl pools pretty good or are they nightmares?

Vinyl pools are generally "pretty good"! Tens of thousands of people have vinyl-lined pools (both above and below ground) and enjoy them completely. There are pros and cons of both vinyl and gunnite lined pools. I would suggest that you talk to several pool builders and pool owners of each kind to get an idea of the relative merits of both. I have a vinyl pool and wouldn't have any other. The bottom is so soft on your feet. The kids can play in the pool for hours and hours and have no problem with their feet. It is slightly less expensive to build and to replace the liner (maybe about 10 years) is not nearly as expensive as replastering/repairing gunnite. The only reason I see that people I know get gunnite is there seems to be more prestige to it than vinyl. One woman said to me once about one of her neighbors that had gunnite, "Oh she has a real pool". Don't listen to her, vinyl is great, my liner is beautiful and it's less expensive. Live in Texas and have had inground vinyl pool for 19 years - have replaced liner twice - cost about $ 1500 8 years ago to replace. Now need some work done on coping (pulling loose)and fiberglass steps need refurbishing. If I can find someone to do repairs at reasonable cost will keep pool. Received quote of $30 + a few days ago to replace with gunite pool. Have enjoyed our vinyl pool. We winterize and shut it down in Sept and open back up May or June and therefore do not have the cost of running the pump during that time. The water is crystal clear when we remove the cover to reopen. My brother has owned a vinyl pool for 20 years and never had any problem with it. It is just as beautiful as any "supposedly real" pool. I've only had my liner for 4 years and it's doing quite well.

Are vinyl siding samples the same color as the siding itself?

I advise you to go to a store and check them out for yourself, so that you know for a fact that they are the accurate color. I would take a piece of vinyl with me, just to make sure its the right color.

Are alaglass or griffin pools better pools?

Alaglass typically sells fiberglass drop-in pools similar to a fiberglass bathtub. These are very inexpensive swimming pools and are the least durable of types of swimming pools.Griffin typically sells in-ground vinyl liner pools. These pools have a solid bottom made typically of vermiculite with steel panels for walls. Then a vinyl liner is installed over it and clipped into place at the top. There is a third type of pool called a gunite pool. These are made of a combination of steel and gunite(a type of concrete),then coated with a waterproof plaster. The advantage of these pools is that they can be designed to any shape you want and they are capable of lasting 20+years with proper maintenance. The disadvantage is they are the most expensive of the three and are the hardest to demolish when you are finally ready to get rid of it.Now if you are interested in which company is the best company to get to build it,that is a crap shoot. The best thing to do is to make sure that everything that is promised to you is put in writing and signed and witnessed by all concerned parties. And no matter how much they ask...DO NOT GIVE THE FINAL CHECK UNTIL YOU ARE COMPLETELY SATISFIED WITH ALL DETAILS OF THE PROJECT,NO MATTER HOW SMALL.That is just giving away your final say in the project and not giving them any incentive to correct any problems that may have been encountered during the build and put off until the end(and dont think that it wont happen.Good luck. Now ask yourself would you rather have a fiberglass bathtub or a vinyl liner bathtub? whos fooling who, Viking fiberglass pools have a lifetime warranty! You decide.
