Why don't oceans freeze over in the Winter?
The oceans are saline or salt water. This affects the temperature at which they freeze. Plain water freezes at about 0°C at sea level, but saline, at the concentrations nor…mally found in the ocean, freezes at close to -2°C. Pressure also affect freezing temperature. The deep ocean is at great pressure, so even though it can be at temperatures of -3°C it does not freeze. The temperature of the surface of the ocean varies from about -2°C to about 34°C depending on currents and latitude. Much of the surface of the Arctic ocean is frozen all year round, but the extent varies during summer and winter. An area of the sea around Antarctica also forms sea ice in winter each year, but much less area is permanently frozen than in the Arctic.

Why is it important to protect water pipes in the winter so that they don't freeze?
If you don't insulate water pipes or protect them in some way from the cold, the water inside the pipes can freeze. This causes you to be without water until the pipes warm up… enough to thaw. Also, when the water freezes, it can expand and burst the pipes which will then need to be replaced. Save yourself the aggravation of having no water and the cost of replacing pipes by insulating them. To protect pipes in an empty or unused building, you can pour anti-freeze down all drains and in the toilet to winterize them.

Why don't deer freeze to death in winter?
White-tailed deer adjust their metabolic rate, home range, and foodsupply in the winter. During the longer summer days, deer have ahigher metabolic rate to take advantage of h…igher quality and moreabundant food supplies. During the shorter days of winter, theylower their metabolic rate and reduce their body temperature. Theysurvive on lower quality food such as white cedar and mountainmaple twigs. They need to eat 6-8 pounds of this reduced nutritionfood. Deer also reduce their home range in winter. They often stay in theshelter of a conifer grove, especially at night. Studies have shownthat night temperatures in these groves are up to 60 degrees warmerthan out in the open. A deer's heavier winter coat, with its hollowhairs, also provides needed insulation against the cold. Deer also match their reproductive cycle to the change in theseasons. They mate in fall. During the early part of theirpregnancy, which occurs during the worst of the winter, the fetusdevelops very slowly and requires very little from the female.During the last trimester, the spring thaw provides more and higherquality browse for the mother such as aspen, willow, and birch. Thefetus then grows rapidly and is born after the snow melts.
