A significant other gives you a feeling of belonging, and personal validation that another individual would choose to be intimate physically and emotionally with you, and not anyone else.
Surely, the pratfall of this is the creation of possessive relationships, which are firstly unhealthy, and secondly built off of the very same insecurities that drive one to find a significant other.
At the end of the day, given the good and bad aspects to relationships, a significant other is someone simply to be there for you in every sense; created by society originally as a precursor to a family.
There is also the societal pull, in which success, or social aptitude can be gauged by whether or not you have a relationship and/or are successful with it. This often times can guide people in the direction of 'needing' a significant other.
Being female, presumably, it's also uncouth and taboo so be physically intimate with more than one partner, this is another reason why women in particular have significant others.
