The name Alcatraz is derived from the Spanish "Alcatraces." In 1775, the Spanish explorer Juan Manuel de Ayala was the first to sail into what is now known as San Francisco Bay - his expedition mapped the bay and named one of the three islands Alcatraces. Over time, the name was Anglicized to Alcatraz. While the exact meaning is still debated, Alcatraz is usually defined as meaning "pelican" or "strange bird."

∙ 15y agoWell, at first it was just a military defence base. Then it turned into a military prison, then a Federal prison. But I assume it was built there because it was an ideal location; and island offered little escape for prisoners, and during its military years they could defend on all sides.

∙ 12y agoIt was put on an island because the nearest land mass was about 3 miles away. That would mean any escaped prisoners would have to swim 3 miles through freezing water to fully escape, however, swimming this would kill you of hypothermia before you could get to shore.
