Why do we need the English language?

English is called English because it is the language that is spoken in England, where it was created. And it is called England and English because it comes from one of the tribes who settled in England. Those tribes were the Angles, Saxons and the Jutes.

The land of what is now England was once called Britanica by the Romans, which then changed to Angleland with the migration of the Angles from the present Europe even before the Sixth century, which in language evolution became England.

So, that is why English is called English, and why Britain is called Britain.

The letters in the word English also have changed through times, which once was Englisch. It is to be noted that this language of the island has such heavily borrowed from the nearest- lying mainland that the French jokingly say that English is nothing but their French, wrongly spelt and wrongly pronounced.

Englisc was used from earliest times without distinction for all the Germanic invaders -- Angles, Saxon, Jutes (Bede's gens Anglorum) -- and applied to their group of related languages by Alfred the Great. "The name English for the language is thus older than the name England for the country" [OED]. After 1066, of the native population of England (as distinguished from Normans and French occupiers), a distinction which lasted about a generation. But as late as Robert of Gloucester's "Chronicle" (c. 1300) it also was sometimes distinguished from "Saxon" ("Þe englisse in þe norþ half, þe saxons bi souþe").
