When the Spanish arrived in 1521 they found mountains and hills that were very deep and when they get out of there, they say, "Thank God we Got out of these depths", Which translates to , "Gracias a dios que salimos de esas honduras", which is where the municipality of "Gracias a dios" got its name, and where Honduras got its name. Gracias a dios is on the west part of the country and is mostly reign forest.
