After WWII the United States told Japan that they were no longer allowed to have a working military force, therefore, Japan is one of the only non-thrid-world nation on the earth which does not dump millions to trillions of dollars into their militaries yearly. Because of this, the Japanese government has millions of dollars to do with what they please and it just so happens that they chose the sciences.
